In Spain, tens of thousands of Galgos (Spanish bred greyhounds) are bred each year in the hope of producing one that will become the national coursing champion.
The history of the Galgo is a long and distinguished one. We have included a link below that gives a comprehensive overview of the Galgo story.
The history of the Galgo
Galgos are cruelly discarded at the end of the coursing season and either left to roam by their owners, or more traditionally, killed in horrifically cruel ways. Hanging is a 'popular' and cheap way of killing the surplus dogs, and evidence is found at the end of each hunting season which proves this tradition is still very much in use.

There are a number of sanctuaries in Spain who endeavour to help the Galgos and provide them with a safe haven and the chance to be rehomed within the EU and further afield.
